When disability and abuse intersect, we take action.

News Summary for September 7, 2015
Articles Compiled by Anne M. Kincaid
Commentary by Nora J. Baladerian, Ph.D.

Articles are listed in alphabetical order by state, so you can easily scan through the articles for those within your state or other states in which you have an interest.

SEXUAL ABUSE: 15, 40, 47, 52, 53, 55, 62, 63

PHYSICAL ABUSE: 12, 21, 28, 29, 35, 36, 42, 48, 49, 57, 93

NEGLECT: 24, 31

MISSING: 1, 41

SCHOOL RELATED: 21, 31, 36, 39, 48, 54, 59

SPECIAL SERIES: Ohio!  There are four articles from Ohio.  #

#43 -  Ohio formally recognizes the need for police training and plan funding for it. Things are great in Ohio.

#44 -  Sex abuse is pervasive yet ignored by both response professionals and prevention efforts.

#45 - The AP version of #43, with statistics on high rates of abuse.

#46. Abuse of people with disabilities is a significant problem and prosecutions are rare. Although there is a perpetrator registry it is 90% of those preying on elders in financial abuse cases.  In this article, the author uses the phrase, “unwanted sexual advances” rather than “sexual assault” or “rape.” Why?  Things are not great in Ohio. (Note:  very soon we will upload to our website the audio version of the NPR radio program on abuse featuring Mary Turocy of the Disability Rights Ohio (at that time) and others (including me!) as well as the transcript plus a link to the excellent DRO three-part series on abuse published in April 2015.

#3 - an autistic child falls into a lake. unable to swim he drowns.  Suggest: let’s teach kids to swim!

#5 - On retrial, perpetrator is found guilty.  Judge had said (prior) “…the judge believed that she had not acted the way a victim should act and the perpetrator did not act like a rapist.”  Hmmmmm.  How should they “act?”  Are all victims the same, with the same personalities, histories and reactions to trauma?  Training is indicated.

#21 - Handcuffing children with disabilities by law enforcement called to classrooms for administering discipline…is IMHO inappropriate, gives bad “lessons” about law enforcement and does not solve the problem of children with disabilities who cannot immediately “respond” to a teachers’ command. Many must move around, they need transition time, and should be afforded accommodations for their differences.

#26 - Financial abuse by court-apppointed guardian/attorney.  No oversight?  Seems there should be at least annual reviews/investigations.

#40 - another case of sexual assault by perpetrator luring victim through social media.  Parents need clear guidance and support for supervision and internet parental controls the kids cannot outsmart or overcome.

#49. - in this case an intruder into the home of a couple with disabilities is attacked by the couple, winds up in the hospital and later in jail.

#65 - Pharmaceutical company found to have “hidden” common side effects such as breast development in boys in medication often used with autistic children.

#81 - sexual expression of adults with I/DD handled appropriately.  There is hope!!!

#82 - Law enforcement adopts program using transponders to track wanderers with autism, Alzheimer’s etc.

Many thanks to Anne Kincaid for collecting and organizing these 113 articles!!! Whew!
