News Summary for June 28, 2015
Articles Compiled by Anne M. Kincaid

Articles are listed in alphabetical order by state, so you can easily scan through the articles for those within your state or other states in which you have an interest.

This week we are featuring ARTICLE #1 because we are FEATURED in ARTICLE #1!!  Please do read about the complaint we filed on June 26, 2015 to correct practices that violate the rights of people with disabilities in probate court.  Let us know if you want to help correct the injustices!  We do not just complain or point out problems, we also recommend specific actions to resolve the problems. Kudos to Tom Coleman for hundreds of hours of research and creative thinking and writing. For more information, visit: spectruminstitute.org

The Newsfeed this week, frankly, is “all over the place.”  You will see in this summary:

SEXUAL ABUSE : 9, 43, 47, 55 (perpetrator got 8 years…probation!)

MURDER:  6, 42, 49

#7 - State does body checks (yep, inside and out) without consent of residents of “facility” for their protection, in response to allegations of abuse.  Whose good idea was this? Looks like the folks there were traumatized by the endeavor.  Your thoughts?

#34 - Article cites increased risk of injury when IEPs do not include aggressive behavior as educational goal.

#52 - I incude this as a warning regarding practices when one is anesthetized.  A patient (not with a disability) decided to tape the procedure to be sure to have post-op instructions handy in case he did not clearly hear/remember them.  What a shock to learn how his physician(s) spoke of him during the procedure.  He sued. He won. Physicians lost.  We become more aware.  What protections should be put in place?  Imagine if this patient had a disability…

Finally, there are some articles worth reading for in-depth information:

#40 - Practice of allowing abusive teachers to work, resign, get new jobs is so common there is a name for it: “passing the trash.” The article provides information that this practice is not only within but outside state lines.  Data findings include that 66% of investigations lead to teacher discipline and license revocation.

#57 - An examination of racial disparities in identification of special educational needs.

#63 - Harvard professor Singer supports infanticide (still).

#64 - Increased choice for self-advocates in selecting caregivers.

#81 - Comprehensive study on abuse of people with disabilities release in Australia

#101 - Examination of why there is a reported disparity in identification of girls versus boys with autism spectrum disorders
