When disability and abuse intersect, we take action.

News Summary for November 23, 2015
Articles Compiled by Anne M. Kincaid
Commentary by Nora J. Baladerian, Ph.D.

Articles are listed in alphabetical order by state, so you can easily scan through the articles for those within your state or other states in which you have an interest.

This week’s newsfeed differs from other weeks in the egregious category of direct and indirect murder of people with disabilities including children.  One reader complained last week that reading these articles is horrifying and depressing…which indeed it can be…unless one is galvanized into action on behalf of those with disabilities, seeking solutions and greater protection as well as punishment for those committing crimes against them.  And it is in this vein, I hope, that you readers gain strength and renewed commitment to the work you are already doing.

Here are the usual categories, and special mention for articles that offer hope for improved response.  You may note that I have changed the first two categories by adding “rape” and “beating” which are usually the crimes reported. Somehow, sexual abuse does not connote rape, and physical abuse may not connote beating…which is the common crime.

SEXUAL ABUSE/RAPE: 20, 21, 22, 26, 37

PHYSICAL ABUSE/BEATING: 1, 8, 9, 11, 13, 29, 31

NEGLECT: 24, 30, 32, 33, 68

FINANCIAL ABUSE: 18

VERBAL ABUSE: 7

MISSING & FOUND: 3, 39

MURDER: 6, 80, 82, 85, 87, 92, 99

SCHOOL-RELATED:  1, 7, 9, 14, 21

BY FAMILY MEMBERS:  6, 13, 32, 82, 87, 92, 99
